Here it is:
Old malls never die, they just fade away.
Don’t you see? It’s symbolic! It isn’t a particular mall or fountain but the very idea of Mall or Fountain!
I miss that style of 1960s/1970s era mall, with fountains and trees like it was pretending to be outside. It reminds me of post-apocalyptic fiction where people are living in bunkers simulating the pre-war surface world.
Having previously lived in places that had four definite seasons, it was nice to have a place to walk around, meet friends and avoid bad weather while doing so (aside from the commute) before Amazon existed.
I liked the little areas that provided a little privacy and separation without cutting yourself off altogether.
Hard to watch b/c the camerawork itself was so poor.
Now imagine a movie intro with a group of 80s High School kids [innocently smug] going there, but not before leaving a fatal message on the family answering machine.
Hi Mom, it’s Suzzy. I’m going to THE MALL with Billy, Mary, and Tommy. I’ll be home at 10. Love ya!
Cue blood curdling music…
I’d suggest Gene Moore’s Organ Score from Carnival of Souls
