The Slinky was invented by accident

He had the idea at work based on his observation of the movement of a torsion spring, but did all the design and research at home.

At least that’s the story and he stuck to it.

I know far too many Boomer and slightly older people who claim that all they own is part of their can-do attitude and hard work. And while the had that, they totally ignore that they started out with access to multi-million dollar machinery, which they got to use - often along with material - for a case of beer donated to the right worker. Instead of the hundreds they would’ve paid on the free market.
