The Volkswagen Atlas' gas gauge is an example of poor information design

Late 90’s!?! My mom’s '77 Grand Prix had that glovebox button. I’m pretty sure grandpa’s '74 Buick Land Yacht had one, too.

can’t happen, unless you radically redesign the fuel level sender and use a tank with a known and calibrated quantity that’s reliable. It’s a bigger task than you think.

The manual for my Tundra tells me that the tanks holds an estimated 21-23 gallons of gas.

Me, I just make it a point to try and keep a half tank of fuel, because it’s easier that way, and if I need to get out of the house and go somewhere in a hurry, I don’t have to go ‘do I need to get gas first?’, I can worry about that after I get where I’m going.

I know the range of a tank on my bikes (with a little either way) and set the trip meter every time I fill up – neither has a fuel gauge.
