These US cities have the worst traffic and Los Angeles isn't even in the top five

I suspect the reliance on driving apps to steer people towards the best route really just ends up spreading the traffic out more, so everywhere is equally congested.

For me, a lot of my “shortcuts” might only be faster some of the time. I end up taking them because it’s more pleasant lazily slinking through neighborhoods than sitting in bumper-to-bumper traffic in the tunnel.

Car traffic is like water, it spreads everywhere unless it is confined.

Driving through neighbourhoods may be more pleasant for you, but with that you make life worse for the people living there.

I think it is apt to refer to Braess’s paradox here, and the phenomenon of induced demand aka the “one more lane will fix it”-fallacy, even if most of you are well aware of both. (This article may serve as a TL;DR.)
