That was always my grandpa’s line. Alfas/jags/MGs et al, aren’t unreliable, you just need to maintain them right. But you have to be a European trained, professional mechanic to maintain them right.

Sunbeam Alpine, the 4-cylinder car that the great Ken Miles shoehorned a V8 into, and that’s where the Tiger sprang from.
Miles was apparently commissioned to make a prototype, but Carroll Shelby was also booked to do a competing one. Shelby’s was apparently the better car, and production was based on his. The idea, specific engine and cramming it into an Alpine, apparently came from neither.
And the idea was inspired by the Cobra, sort of the original “hey cram a Ford v8 into this tiny British Sports car”.
