Ha! I knew that - I have no idea why I said otherwise. The final episode of series 2 sets it up unambiguously! Thanks anyway. 
Makes sense. Red Hook is a Lovecraft reference, of course.
I would recommend The Ballad of Black Tom by Victor LaValle. It is a rebuttal to Lovecraft’s Horror of Red Hook, from a Black perspective.
