I never heard of a local network affiliate that let their meteorologist determine the programming though.

Classist or not, Tim Cook simply has exposure and press coverage that your average gay person doesn’t. Add to that his position at the head of one of the world’s megacorps, and, like it or not, it may be “world changing”. It would be nice to think that Joe average guy has as much power and clout, or the potential to reach as many people as Mr. Cook, but that’s just not the case. I have to imagine that businesses and even countries that want to deal with Apple, will have to consider Mr. Cook’s declaration when formulating their business strategies.
It is an appeal to power/authority based on economics, which may be totally unfair, and unequal, but which unfortunately seems to be the way the world works.
