You have a point, but I think that the development of “app stores” almost completely replaced the shareware model by the whale-hunting model. I may be wrong, though. I don’t play games, more or less.

Not completely. I’ve played a couple of games that are free to play but come with an energy system that limits how much you play that have a $5-$6 one time payment for permanent unlimited energy. That’s what made me think of shareware. I guess they were both Spry Fox games, so I supposed it’s just the philosophy of that one company.
