TSA threatens to stop accepting driver's licenses from nine states as of Jan 10

Not always an identifying one, though.

Because Obama!! Socialism!! Coming for my guns!!

Because it won’t be free?

Every time I have to renew my license, the fee has increased but the manpower remains the same (or less). I guess the increased pay is for the new design changes they have every couple years?

I’d rather fly with my passport, which is good for another five years. I just renewed my license in August and you know that TSA will mandate that flyers must have a newer CDL version to fly one California becomes compliant. And the DMV will not be replacing those for free.

This may be a problem off you have federal jury duty. Fortunately, the men and women running these checkpoints are often retired federal law enforcement and they actually use their brains. I’ve even told them that airport travel could be pleasurable one again if they could run the security.

Since Discourse is being funny, let me just say with regards to your comment:

I’m already on a list. Unless you mean yet another list, in which case, yes, I’m sure I am. (Also: I’ve been on a list since 1992 when I lost my TS:SCI security clearance due to being bisexual.)

Ugh… and 1992 is hardly the Really Bad Old Days. Please tell me we don’t still do this.

I wonder if the reason our alphabet soup of government agencies seems to be getting increasingly corrupt and inept is because we’ve been steadily disqualifying all the reasonable people for the past sixty years.

No, you pretty much just figured it out.
You should bring your ID to the airport. If you don’t, TSA is going to annoy the hell out of you.
However, you aren’t REQUIRED to bring any ID to the airport.

So, they are basically saying that they will annoy people more in Minn than in other states. This does not mean that people won’t be allowed to fly. No one is going to be turned away, that is just the media sensationalizing the story. The federal government is hoping on this type of hype, forcing Minn and other states to actually implement RealID standards.

The funny thing is that they won’t actually pull the rug, because people are much more willing to petition their state senators when they think they aren’t allowed to fly than when they know that the TSA will hassle them a bit more. It is even more ironic when you realize that many of the people who are opposed to RealID or a national ID are the same people who want “voter ID laws”.

The point was that most of our license issues (which go through the DMV) wouldn’t be issues if we just had a national ID card that WAS free.

You shouldn’t need to drive or get eye exams or anything to have an ID card, and that’s something that should be free and wouldn’t require as much overhead.

Because the granting of ye lisense to drivee is among the most sacred of perogatives retained by our most gracious and sovereign states.

The reason they are a bad idea is that we don’t know yet what the scenario might be. It already has precursors in the various (IMO outrageously unconstitutional) checkpoints that courts have allowed. But we can say with a lot of certainty that any national centralized database will be abused, insecure, and unreliable. Which means it’s best to not go down that path.

Keep in mind that the only reason that this is an issue (as much as it is) is because of an alliance between libertarian-minded right and the anti-GWB left. Both sides need to stay strong.

It’s sometimes hard to believe that it was only about 24 years ago.

I honestly don’t know if we do or not. Yes, we’ve revised the rules for the military such that lesbians and gays can now openly serve, but that certainly doesn’t mean we’ve changed all the associated regulations to go with that. Even when my clearance was removed, it wasn’t specifically because I has bi, but because I had lied when I answered ‘no’ to the question of whether I was gay or bi. (Which, given the laws at the time, was pretty much like asking if I had stopped beating my partner.)

But it won’t be free. A national I.D. will have to cost something, if only to partially offset some of the actual costs of producing each unit. And then Congress will have to fund the rest.

And every year, the fascists would have something to complain about. “Why should we have to invest in Democracy! We’re already a democracy, and Ben Franklin said we should instead be a republic. Like Rome!” And President Trump will nod sagely, and omit it from his budget.

There’s another trap here I haven’t seen any articles discussing. I live in Florida, a state which complies with Real ID. However, I got my license prior to Real ID’s implementation, and Florida allows license renewal by mail/internet. Florida (and I think all Real ID states) marks licenses which have been Real ID verified with a star in the corner. Since I’ve been renewing by mail, my license doesn’t have the star, so technically it can’t be used at any facility which requires a Real ID-compliant ID. I think there are going to be a lot of people who get burned since they have no idea their license isn’t verified.

For me to get a Real ID-compliant license, I have to go to the DMV in person and present my verification documents-- luckily my DMV makes appointments. I also have to pay a duplicate license fee, which is frankly the more irritating part.

I have told my management politely NO when asked about a security clearance. One since my granddad did for reals spy work for the army I already have a file and I would like to keep my kid reasonably file free. Two I am too damn old and cranky to want to deal with NO I CAN’T TALK ABOUT WHAT I DID AT WORK.

TSA is an abrogation of justice.

Dismand this joke of security. Now, please.

Thank you.
