So how much would it cost to take Breitbart and The Daily Mail off the net?

Asking for a friend.

Shouldn’t that read “two skiddies”? Since when are these low rent losers “hackers”?

taking down Level 3, Dyn and other hardened, well-provisioned internet giants

Putting all of your DNS in one place, and then setting TTLs as short as possible because you rely on CDNs is not particularly “hardened”.

The criminals have declined to demonstrate their botnet, but it’s at least plausible that such a botnet has been assembled, given that IoT devices as a class are very poorly designed and protected, and that the Mirai malware had lots of room for improvement.

Okay, that I agree with.

How much to take down alternet or the guardian?

In actuality I like it that any flavor of crockpot is allowed to speak.

Lots of booters and stressers are available. Not so hard to launch a DDoS attack.
In fact, that’s why it’s so important for us to make sure we’re protected. Incapsula has a Mirai scanner where you can scan your network to make sure you’re not vulnerable to a Mirai infection: https://www.incapsula.com/mirai-scanner/ Be a good netizen and check your network
