This is good and all but it just seems like a slap on the wrist - a little tit-for-tat.

If we really want to hurt the Russian effort we need to remove the asset that they put in the White House. That’ll really set them back.

All that money we spend on the NSA and Cyber Command and the best they had was a DDOS? Can we get our money back?

There’s no strategic disadvantage to disclosing to the world that they ran a DDoS.

Bragging about how they rooted all their infrastructure through an IME backdoor might be a little counterproductive.

Man, no kidding. A DDoS for just one day. That’s firing a warning shot with a pop gun. Couldn’t we at least SWAT them? Spoof some cellphone calls to different Russian emergency services claiming the building is under attack by terrorists, complete with the sounds of gunshots, explosions, and screaming. Then the Russian security services storm the building and evacuate everyone inside. We take pictures of everyone that comes out and use casino-grade facial recognition technology to ID them.

And THEN the NSA starts ordering pizzas…

A directed EMP pulse to that building would be a better story.

“…and was intended to serve as a warning that “the Kremlin’s operations against the United States are not cost-free.””

So… the “cost” was that they didn’t get to do it for one day…

What about all of what they may have accomplished before the actual election?

I suppose a DDOS for a day is not “cost-free”, but it’s so close it feels like there’s nary a difference.

Do you have Tsar Nicholas II in a can?

If true, I feel slightly comforted that Russia’s troll army could be taken down by a DDoS.

Still, I used to get a lot of probes in my logs from IP addresses in France and Germany that probably weren’t coming from those countries. Did they really wack all the holes, or did the Russians call it a half-holiday because being blocked on Election Day was late in the game, no need to expose other resources?

Loud laughter?

Well, that’s what they’ll publicly admit to, on a world stage – basically “playing nice” with countries that haven’t been playing nice. But who knows what else they’ve been doing, covertly, that they won’t admit to? (And will be decades before it’s ever de-classified.)
