It has been technically possible to install other app store alternatives on Android phones since… ever? But you do have to do so by allowing unauthorized app installs
Unapproved, not unauthorised. Sideloading has always been an option on Android, locked down devices aside (and even then it’s possible).
Good. Now do Microsoft and the Microsoft Store.
Steam blows that one out of the water.
Unless you’re talking console. Then them and Nintendo and Sony
It would be nice if they allowed for alternate OS on consoles. Like how PS3 used to allow for Linux on it.
Hmm. Honest question: is Steam pre-installed on Window’s computers now? (I strip so much out of the images we create that I really don’t know.) I can’t uninstall Microsoft Store because that breaks things. I don’t use Windows on my personal devices, but on our staff and patron computers I still see how much MStore tries to inject itself.
Steam is certainly a giant, but it doesn’t keep me from installing and using Epic or other platforms.
Nah Steam you have to download to install. But even looking at something like the Steamdeck the OS is Linux based, but i want to say that you can put another OS on there if you’re brave and skilled enough. And i think i recall people have been able to install Epic’s launcher on it, it probably is janky but its possible
The store can be ignored for the most part.
And with your argument steam doesn’t stop you from installing epic, neither does the ms store. Their store is an annoyance, and probably should be allowed to be uninstalled, but that should be lower on the list for DOJ to deal with than say, edge.
I had a similar issue recently with Teams. My drive died recently and had to replace it, the place i took my PC to asked if i wanted Win 11 on it and i thought that’s what i already had (i was mistaken). I was extremely annoyed to find out that Teams couldn’t be uninstalled unless you used the command prompt. Which i did use
