There is no dichotomy here, Mojo. We can joke, poke fun, and enjoy life while at the same time remaining responsible and active. There will never be “too many jokes”, too many smiles, or too much silliness in the world. Too often, there is not enough.

I have no Facebook. I have no twitter. I am not a Muslim, but suppose I let my beard grow. I wonder how they would treat me? Would I be required to prove three negatives? Will our National Identity Cards list religion and party affiliation?

That’s where I’m a little unclear. I’ve always been under the impression that ultimately unless you’re charged with something they can’t completely refuse a US citizen reentry. However they can make a it royal pain and seize pretty much whatever you’re traveling with.

I came here to post that too. We are talking about Muslim Americans who are traveling on, I assume, US passports. There’s nothing there about religion.
So I guess that we now allow our border agents to play “Spot the Muslim” even though that’s eighteen kinds of wrong.

Yeah, intent is always difficult online without smilies and winkies and /s and all that. I mean, yeah, I despise Trump, but I was playing on the whole “Thanks Obama” thing that started happening early in his Presidency when he was getting blamed for things he had no control over and wasn’t the cause of. Alas, poor joke, I told you poorly.

Just how do they determine one’s religious affiliations? how would someone hypothetically make sure they show up as a muslim? I want to hand over social media logins to these people. I could have a lot of fun creating social media accounts for the TSA to peruse.

Oh, I’ve been “turning on my own” for a long time now. Although I call it doing my part to save my own from their own self-destructive and short-sighted impulses. Not that it’s done much good, judging by the rapid acceleration I’ve seen in the last few weeks.

I did, but it’s OK. Got what you’re saying now. I’d argue that America has been turning on many of its own citizens since the days of Reconstruction. The (ever-expanding) border zone is one of the few places where privileged Americans get a small taste of the nerve-wracking experience of unchecked authority that our darker-skinned citizens get on a regular basis, and that taste is about to get a lot larger.
It’s not only about the border tightening up for people, either. The White House just announced plans to slap a 20%(!!) tariff on Mexican imports to fund that stupid “wall.” They haven’t forgotten about their plan to withhold or heavily tax remittance payments, either.
