I am thinking about a concept car. A lightweight shell, with two ducted fans, and four wheels and a retractable skirt. Normal mode of operation is a wheeled car. If needed, the wheels can be retracted and the skirt lowered, and voila, hovercraft. For short periods, the vehicle could fly at low altitude (tens of feet). Ideal for low-cost transportation, allowing runs off the roads - meadows, fields, rivers…, and hops over traffic jams or crossroads. No more missing an exit - just fly off the highway. No more finding a bridge, just cross the river.

Most of the distances can be done with good fuel economy on wheels. Only the short parts where the flight is actually needed are done airborne. Best of both worlds.
