Video games without people of color are not 'neutral'

I didn’t know that the Black Madonna pin was one of Lech Walesa’s signature symbols.

Surprised none of the experts in Polish culture upthread had made this connection.

It’s doubtful that modern Polish nationalists want to accept the “outside” influences on Polish culture. On the one hand, Poland probably has one of the strongest claims to a longstanding cultural tradition we can think of as “Polish” (compared to other Eastern European nations, many of whom were part of one empire or another when Poland was its own kingdom) and they are understandably touchy given their recent history of invasion by the germans and Soviets. On the other hand, Poland was a place where people moved through, and it wouldn’t be surprising that you’d get these sorts of connections with the Mediterranean region, given its strong association with Catholicism.

except it doesn’t. where specifically do you see it saying so? to me the article seems pretty thoughtful critique.

i’d say the problem comes in when people are dismissive of the issues people of color face. representation in games isn’t perhaps the most pressing, but still it can be vastly improved.

Putting a black character in would have been the definition of tokenism and honestly kinda offensive on its own.

it’s good to know you now agree good representation is important! i’m happy to have been a part of winning you over.

still sorry you don’t seem to think cdpr can do a good job at it. give them some credit. they’ve made a pretty darn good game.

And the main antagonist the first game was from Zerrikania. I’m still feeling that we’re doing the nitpicking thing though…

Surely, these are not to condemn the game. I’ve spent enough time in this thread precisely because I love the series, the stories, the world, and the work that CDPR has done.

Which is why weak defenses are weak to me.

We’ve a quest to find a master armorer, and a master blacksmith. After 3 games of using bombs, why not 1 quest to find a master Zerkanian bomb-maker?

Those sneaky, war-like orcs!

It doesn’t matter to me that there is a demand for more choices in that arena. Go read my posts, I’ve never said that, not once, nor even implied it. I’m all for it, and have said just that in replies to others.

Also I know you had a bit of fun with my use of “honestly,” but in this thread, as you are surely aware, there are more than enough rhetorical and sarcastic comments. I felt it appropriate to qualify the fact that I was indeed asking a genuine question.

Now I didn’t say this either, but to me identifying with a character isn’t as one dimensional as just one aspect, be it gender, race, philosophical views, aspects of personality, height, weight, whatever. Growing up I was a fan of early Metroid games and later Tomb Raider games. I’m not female but that doesn’t mean I couldn’t identify with the characters in some other way. That’s why my original question was “where you don’t completely personally identify with the protagonist.”

Now that being said, even if I played a game where I didn’t identify in any way what so ever with a main character, or if there was no main character, I still enjoy it. PvZ:GW off the top of my head. I in no way identify with a little green peashooter, we aren’t even from the same phylogenetic kingdom (yea I get they’re anthropomorphized) but I had fun with it.

You’re certainly right that lack of diversity is an issue in games. I think inclusive gaming practices are something the industry should be, and is, pushing toward and it’s a good thing. That’s something that I’ve been agreeing with for literally every post I’ve made here. You can reply and argue semantics, but fundamentally I agree on that main point.

I’ve completely lost count of the number of people who have outed themselves as violent racists in this thread.

It’s kinda amazing.

If there was anything about the article that could be fairly criticized, you’d think there might be someone saying it who wasn’t, you know, a white supremacist or somesuch.
