Did you look at Satanvision? It’s an incredibly low-resolution TV made of red LEDs. Yet when watching an old black-and-white movie on those red LEDs, I could see the sheen in the satin jacket on an actor.
Our brains fill in a lot of visual gaps. It helps if the image doesn’t have crisp pixels, and it doesn’t matter how those pixels are formed.
I have a jar full of reject LEDs, but I doubt it comes to ~10k of them. And then there’s the problem of driving them.
I do have a 1.6" 256x256 Pi display. If I stick it behind an old TV Fresnel lens, that might look awesome for the person sitting in just the right spot. Hmmm.
