Creating your own private VPN server on Azure is cheap (free if you have a trial or Visual Studio subscription) and can be done in just a few clicks. I use one of these when I travel so I can have some confidence my data is protected when I’m on airport or hotel WiFi.

Example:

Don’t use these for anything illegal though. Just because your data is protected doesn’t mean you can’t be traced.

But is something you create on Azure “your own” or is it Microsoft’s

Well, short of getting your own private server in a colo somewhere it’s a pretty good alternative. I’m personally not to worried about a personal VM hosted by a reputable cloud service provider. Nothing is without risk but I’d trust this over some sketchy “free” solution.
