Watch ants shoot acid at a person's hand

Carla’s citing the Daily Mail again?

Reminder: the Daily Mail is not a reliable source on anything whatsoever. Citing it actively diminishes the credibility of whatever’s being ‘verified’.

Is this where the term piss ant comes from?

So it smells like vinegar, but what does it taste like? Shoddy reportage.

I’ve sniffed formic acid, and it doesn’t smell like vinegar – it’s reminiscent of stink bugs / cilantro, but has a stronger, musky undertone. I never got around to tasting it, but I’d be sure it’s just awful tasting stuff.

The ants who have evolved away their stingers (ants are cousins to wasps) will simultaneously bite and spray formic acid, resulting in painful bites (some genera of ants kept their stingers).

“Formic” comes from “formica”, latin for “ant.” You don’t have to have to go through Germany to get to Rome.

It’s pretty much the shortest route if you start in Denmark…
