If we had Living National Treasures, I’d vote for Patti Smith first (then Lynda Barry). What makes her so unusual, so rare, so un-rock ‘n’ roll is that she’s better at her craft, far better, than when she was young. And, unlike most rock ‘n’ rollers, she’s still a person, still growing and interacting with the world around her, still taking responsibility, still molding her fame into a tool for her concerns. She’s got a few great songs and a lot of tingles
