Watching porn in Lousiana now requires submitting a driver's license

i’d imagine anything involving women’s health, and particularly abortion.

also, every hbo show ever.

She seems to have links with the Koch State Policy Network, so expect similar legislation to start landing in other states shortly.

I’ll note that it’ll affect men’s health too, and a fair number of them just don’t take proper care of themselves around the groin.

I mean, isn’t that where the infamous “I don’t wipe my butt because I’m afraid I’ll touch my anus and turn gay” thread came about as a result?

(I realize that thread, where ever it came from (probably 4chan or one of the more skeevy subreddits) was quite likely a trolley, but still…)

in theory it might. i wouldn’t hold my breath for equal application of the law. i’m sure some of them would happily bar sex ed while giving out viagra in highschool vending machines

Porn will always find a way to reveal itself, the demand is too high for such a barrier to work.

Interesting. There are substantial provisions in the bill about identity protection, specifically “Any commercial entity or third party that performs the required age verification shall not retain any identifying information of the individual after access has been granted to the material.”

While there is considerable abuse potential – imagine having to do a new verification for every image and video – it seems also to be worded so that it would be inherently illegal for such commercial entities who now know for sure who is who to out or leak information about the sexual preferences of politicians and other government officials. It also seems to automatically make any lawsuit about violations problematic – even if a company “verifies” an obvious fake, since they have to destroy the evidence immediately upon verification and access granted to the material.

Any reasonable Supreme Court would immediately strike it down on the obvious issues, but that’s not really an issue anymore. I leave it to someone with the patience and legal experience to read the federal law and see if it has the same issues, but given its authorship, I expect its just another weaponized cultural thing being used to polarize voters with a lip service legislation.

Indeed. People joke about cats running the web but it’s really porn.

You don’t even need to know how to use a VPN.
Suddenly every iPhone user in the state of Louisiana is no longer in the state of Louisiana.

That is exactly what it is. There are age verification services that will verify a DL/ID number from any state is valid and the age is 18+ or 21+. That is all they return. No personal info. This is just to placate lawmakers who realize the “I am 18” checkbox is easily bypassed.

It’s still not good. Let one verification service or porn site using this get caught storing numbers (or get compromised with malware that sniffs numbers) and we have a big privacy problem on our hands.

This is great news for people who have a fetish for publicly outing themselves every time they masturbate.

Right? They could just put the website in a nearby wooded area or field.

To be fair, it took a bit longer than expected as said tube was found to be full of shit.

The section (c) carve-out looks particularly sneaky to me. The usual literary, artistic, political, scientific value stuff; but with a “for minors” caveat.

More typical “I hate porn but don’t want to get laughed out of court” carve-outs don’t have that caveat; so the entire class of things-involving-naked-people-but-for-art-or-science remains under threat if some peevish local pear clutcher alleges that 17 year olds needn’t know about such filth. That could get bad.

You filthy, filthy, fungus. Now we have to age-gate the age-gating services since ‘exhibitions’ are age-gated.
