I suspect that you’d have to go back pretty far to find a time when at least some fans weren’t criticizing SDCC as being too big and bloated for its own good, although subsequent levels of overcrowding and inability of long-time fans to get tickets probably put that into perspective. It was probably too late by the time I went to my first comics con in 2004 (Wizard World Chicago, which was pretty disheartening in terms of extracting money from fans, particularly in limiting access to the most popular creators by increasingly-expensive ticket tiers).
