And the marketing is just the cherry on top of the shit sundae:
I propose that we start calling Greta the Licypriya of Europe.
I think there is a real chance you could convince Greta to change their twitter bio to that.
Apologizing for cutting someone out by refusing to say her name.
Meh, never mind, “the black one” is just fine.

It worked for John McCain.
Or not.
We do so like to say we’re “speaking for the voiceless”, but really
I wonder who’s been silencing them?¹
¹Rhetorical question does not require answering.
And the “faceless.”
Myriam Gurba : “It felt insulting that I am in a country with a tremendous cultural history and a tremendous literary history, and I’m reading a book with an introductory letter from a publisher that argues that this author is going to give a face to the faceless. And I’m looking around at my Mexican family, and we all have faces. And faces and voices matter in my family.”
Great to here that this brown-faced author’s tour has been cancelled.
And:
American Dirt is an insult to Latinx writers who have toiled – some of us for decades – to little notice of major publishers and book reviewers, while building a vast collection of breathtaking, authentic literature often published by university and independent presses on shoestring budgets. And while the folks who run Flatiron Books have every right to pay seven figures to buy and publish a book like American Dirt, they have no immunity from bad reviews and valid criticism.
And that’s why more than 90 Latinx and other writers signed an open letter to Oprah Winfrey asking her to rethink the much-publicized inclusion of American Dirt in her renowned book club. I signed on to this letter with the hope Winfrey will do the right thing.
Yeah, good luck. Oprah hasn’t got the best track record on that front.
She did call out that white dude for lying in his memoir about being a reckless drug abuser.
Yeah, but that’s because she’d been conned into thinking it was true, meaning he embarrassed her. One does not embarrass Oprah and walk away clean. And she could spin that for further spectacle.
Stuff like this, though? You get better ratings with the poor, attacked white author who was just trying to tell a story than from the brown people who called her out on it being trash.
Don’t forget, Oprah is where we got Dr. Phil and Dr. Oz.
Ha, no, I’m not saying I have any faith in the integrity of Oprah.
Committing a crime and trying to blame it on a black person may not be an example of white culture, but it does seem to be something that only white people do.
I’m learning more about white people all the time here.
Some people of color I’ve known find dog kissing pretty emblematic.
So, Lucy isn’t white?
Ha, come to think of it, in a lot of ways she’s not an enthusiastic enactor of white culture!
Apparently a long-standing joke where my daughter lives is that white people think going swimming counts as a bath. As a former high school and college swimmer, I could only respond YUCK!!!
