After reading that story, about all I can say is that it sucks that it even counts as “news.” What that course teaches should be par for the course (ha) in college courses, or really sooner so it’s common knowledge by the time students get to college, not something “controversial.”
I hope (I know, naive of me) that the reason this was “news” was that there were people who thought it was not SOP. But you are right, it should be. In fact, if we are going to be honest with ourselves, it must be SOP to think about how our assumptions affect others. That ought to be something all of us would do because it is what civilized people do.
I appreciated the fact that it appeared to be objectively reported, without the usual adjectives and turns of phrase to make sure the readership would know to deride the message.
wypipo culture.
This is the million dollar problem. The two hardest things I have found in raising my kids is determening what are the background concepts that we don’t even know we have that i want to kill and not pass on. The other is finding the fine line between breaking my kid’s spirit, tenacity, and agency through too much discipline or creating a member of the Lord of the Flies through too much freedom. The mere fact you are considering these deep ideals means that you and your kids are in a hell of a better shape than the millions that are just warehoused in schools and who’s education is completely abdicated. We will all screw up our kids, it’s just a matter of how much.
That sums up the parenting dilemma. How much rope to give them so they can gain experience while they still have a safety net, and yet not hang themselves? Different answers for each kid, no one-size-fits-all.
The Betsy Streeter cartoon I’ve had hanging on the kitchen door since my kids were little:
Our society will always protect white feelings at the expense of the people of color who speak up about it.
Cancel Culture is White Culture. A thread:
I learned a new word from that thread, which I didn’t even need to look up because it was so obviously the perfect mashup: misogynoir. But here is the lookup anyway!
Right?
Well, this is sad news!
His book is highly recommended, if you’ve never read it, along with David Roediger’s The Wages of Whiteness.
White culture = Taking pride in US democracy while overlooking (or enthusiastically supporting) the many ways in which people of color are still denied voting rights
Pretty much sums it up, eh? I would point out that most vile creatures are at their most dangerous in that situation.
