Why are heat pumps so hot right now?

Heat pumps being “new” has got to be a regional thing. Here in Maryland, every house I have lived for the past 30+ years has had a heat pump. They have gotten dramatically better in the last 10-15 years. The old heat pump in my house could not keep up when it was below freezing, but the two-stage r410a system I had installed about 10 years ago almost never requires the aux heat, and the year-round savings on my electric bill just about covered the monthly financing of the upgrade.
