Why can’t you use your phone on an airplane?

Funny, it didn’t used to be that way.

When working for Radio Shack when it was actually viable, I saw plenty of RS executives and big wigs that were using their cell phones (either bag phones of the Brick!) on planes. Of course, they didn’t have to pay the minutes, so of course they talked their mouths off. Then again, at the time, they were still making their computers in Texas. I was lowly tech support.

Mobile phones are now able to call over wifi, do planes disable that function on their routers perhaps?

I also wonder how the credit card swipe machines transmit while in air?

I’d be perfectly fine with that if that were the given reason for it.
It’s when they come out with bogus-safety*/security-theatre crap to justify it that it becomes annoying. Just say it’s banned for the actual reasons it’s banned.

*Any plane so badly designed that it’s at risk from cell-phone interference shouldn’t be flying full stop.
