Absolutely, but when you don’t read about people like yourself as a child you tend to feel attachment to anything that resembles your experiences.

Similar to how Jadzia Dax and Buffy The Vampire Slayer were icons for us trans folk who came of age in the ‘90s. We grasp for anything even vaguely relatable when no other sympathetic representation is available. Certainly neither of those characters were written to be trans icons, but they acted as them anyway.
