I hope her recordings make it into some archive somewhere.
Given the increased interest by right-wingers in erasing and re-writing history, and the tendency of a lot of acquirers of news outlets to destroy their archives and morgues or keep them under lock and key, Stokes did society a great service (albeit at a cost to her own family and well-being). That the wonderful folks at archive.org now have possession of the collection is truly wonderful.
When I first ran across this I watched a few choice shows. I found some public access content that consisted of local civic discussions of race, poverty and equality and what I found to be most interesting was no matter how much time has passed pretty much everything remains the same. Except for haircuts and eyeglass fashion.
You’re scaring me.
I swear i think BB has posted about this before earlier this year because i know this story, just don’t know from where i had read it. It’s definitely a tragic story in how this woman got started with her obsessive recordings, i am glad some good can come out of it even though her reasoning for pursuing this hobby were pretty out there.
They have and are being digitized right now: https://blog.archive.org/2019/05/24/71716-video-tapes-in-12094-days/
I know Marion Stokes’ son Michael. He has the same archivist gene. In his case, it is for books. He is building a library on magic and folklore.
