Workers rights and unions

We need to keep putting the silent white at the front of every mainstream discussion of what working class people want and how they haven’t been listened to.

Because they have a kind of person in mind when they talk about the working class. And it’s not representative of the working class.

True, but they are Zionist Jewish people exterminating Palestinian people. That what they’re doing is not as programmatic and thorough as what Nazis did to Jews does not render the comparison entirely inapt.

It’s not for nothing that reasonable observers use terms like ethnic cleansing and genocide to describe what’s happening over there.

It’s pretty easy for me to just talk to a Palestinian person, pretty much by definition a refugee, and always has been, so I’ve never been under illusions about the Israeli project. I just don’t think the term is useful in discussion.

Israel, and surrounding areas, are being ethnically cleansed, that’s for sure. But the kinds of camps that, say Jeffrey Prison Guard from the Atlantic volunteered in, are not extermination camps.

Now they are full of people put there after a court case in a language they didn’t know and where their lawyer wasn’t allowed to see or hear the evidence against them and in a political discourse which literally argues about whether Palestinians are humans in the context of human rights and they are treated brutally there (I was going to detail some of the abuse I know is done to internees in Israeli prisons but I realised the spoiler tag wouldn’t really be enough) but extermination camps is another and very extreme step.

I know. Once again, I wouldn’t say the levels of murder and abuse are the same. Nevertheless, both are levels of murder and abuse, aimed at a specific people.

Specific people not considered humans by coalition partners in both the current and previous government alliances.

If that doesn’t set alarm bells off I don’t really know what it will take.

Maybe alternatives could be used, like payless peon, salaried serf, defrauded drudge…

China’s Ministry of Transport, along with eight other agencies, has issued an edict that demands working conditions ride share operators provide for drivers must improve.

The main thrust of the new document, titled “Opinions to Strengthen the Protection of the Rights and Interests of Workers in the New Mode of Transportation”, is for operators to become more transparent and humane.

Definitely a positive step! But sad that having access to bathrooms and sleep is considered “paradise.” :frowning:

Yeah, but then, a lot of them do listen to, or overhear “Classic Rock!” radio stations and other feeds. I remember hearing that song in a grocery store not long ago.

this “essential” job pays a garbage wage. The median annual income for a truck driver in this country is less than $40,000 a year. For many of us, 50 percent of our take-home pay immediately disappears to cover rent. Compare that to the median annual income for a cop in this country, which is $67,000 per year. That’s enough to buy a house, raise a family, and live a life. Meanwhile, truck drivers have the seventh most deadly job in America, with the highest number of fatalities per year, while cops come in twenty-second. A truck driver is 200 percent more likely than a cop to get killed on the job. Cops have unions. Most truckers don’t. Union jobs pay better and play safer.

Do we need a Fucking British Press topic, like the Fucking NY Times one?

With the heavy manipulation by the MSM reporting news about the pandemic (especially stats regarding recovery, vaccination rates, effect of mandates, etc.), copaganda, anything positive from the Biden administration, and soft-pedaling articles about crime based on who’s committing them, maybe we need a FAIR topic…

I was simultaneously a member of the Universities and Colleges Union (teachers) and the National Union of Students (students, but not a workers’ union). I took part in a strike organised by one union that the other condemned.

I want the NUS to support UCU and to point out that domestic students are paying £9k/year, teachers deserve to be treated right. International fees vary.
