WSJ editorial corrected

I’m pretty sure Bush changed the bankruptcy law whereby medical debt will follow you the rest of your life; no clean slate to start your credit history over.

If Obamacare had simply covered Thighmasters, we wouldn’t be having this conversation.

I don’t think this op ed was meant for those of us with broadband connections and googlefoo. It’s meant for the people who think they’re too old to learn anything about technology that’s been widely available to the general public for nearly 20 years and still get their “news” from lightly bleached papers with dusty ink that comes off on your hands.

In other words one of the many differences between her and Dolly Parton is that Dolly has the integrity to say, “It’s expensive to look this cheap.”

I believe if someone actually believes Suzanne Somers is a serious healthcare expert, they are not too likely to accept logical criticism of her scholarly views.

Was thinking the same thing as I was typing that…

So if they’re down on socialist Ponzi schemes, I assume they’re going to be doing away with Social Security ASAP? That’s the very definition of a socialist Ponzi scheme.

As a current cancer patient myself, whose chances of long term survival have been greatly improved this past year by the latest advancements in cancer treatments, I find this to be particularly galling.

We have that too in America. It’s called an urgent care clinic and I went to one just last week. Saw a doctor within 20 minutes without an appointment and it was covered by my insurance. They were amazingly efficient, too. They had my blood work done within 24 hours and they called me to let me know. I’ve been to doctors who never even bothered to me know if my blood work had come back. If I needed to see a specialist, they were going to set up an appointment for me. That’s service.

Everybody knows that Massachusetts is going to sink into the ocean because of legalizing gay marriage long before it sinks into the ocean because of healthcare.

I think that it is time to spawn a new joke story line with the punchline “The Experts”
Setup: B-list celebrity going to the WSJ editor;
The editor asks what they do.
B-list celebrity explains the premise for their editorial.

Editorial: It is described in as much detail as the teller prefers.
While most tellings follow one of a few basic forms, the description of the editorial is meant to be an ad lib.
Traditionally, the description is tasteless and inaccurate. The goal is to significantly transgress social norms of logic. Mis-attributed quotes; ad-hominen attacks; silly stuff: coffee enemas, chemtrails, etc; anecdotal evidence; are common themes.

Punch line: The intrigued editor asks what the column is called, and the proud answer (sometimes delivered with a flourish) is: “The Experts!”

(borrowed from wikipedia “the aristocrats” entry)

Making scary assertions without the facts to back them up is a typical GOP tactic. During the last election cycle they were harping on about how bad the Canadian and British health care systems are. They totally ignored all of the Canadians and Brits who indignantly responded in support of their healthcare systems.

My favorite was the editorial by Investor Business Daily that asserted that if Stephen Hawking were British he’d be dead. Given that Dr. Hawking is of course British, under NHS care, and has credited their care for keeping them alive, it’s a remarkable claim.

Ugh. Why do I write stuff like this? I have no chance to survive make my time. I’m not tearing off great chunks and recycling at top speed*, I’m just regurgitating it somewhat masticated and damp.

Thanks to everybody with the serious comments pointing relevant things out.

I’m betting that they (Canadian Healthcare System) did not withhold treatment from her Canadian friend – she was likely at a stage where palliative therapy is the only recommended option and they weren’t willing to entertain certain cancer “treatments” that Ms. Somers recommended.

The reason you were able to see a doctor within 20 minutes is that the masses of uninsured rarely show up to these clinics because they’re afraid to get into life-crushing debt. Considering how much your insurance pays those doctors, they’d better be amazingly efficient.

And for the cases where uninsured still go to the ER or urgent care clinics (usually because of extreme conditions, like being close to dying) and can’t pay, it just drives up the cost for the insurers, who transfer it back to you through increases in health insurance costs.

Lose your job (and insurance) and then let me know how quickly you can get to see a doctor (if you elect to visit a clinic or ER at all.)
