t’s funny, I hadn’t really thought about how the commandments were presented, I think I subconsciously assumed they had been in some kind of appendix that was handed down from on high. I also didn’t know that the god of the bible self-identified as jealous so explicitly in multiple places.

Is it legit to refer to commandments by number?

It’s a long-standing custom, made interesting by the fact that Catholic and Protestant traditions number them differently. Plus, what @chgoliz said.

Yes, the Jews, the Protestants and the Catholics tend to number the commanments differently. Although, iirc, the protestants cheat and combine the last two, calling then the “ninth and tenth commandments”.
