Cannabis extract reduces epileptic seizures by half

Hillary Clinton is against legalization. She is doing what Obama did with gay marriage, which is to say that she is running and hiding LONG after it has gotten really fucking awkward. She dodges the question when asked and saysshe is against legalization if she is forced into a corner by a reporter who has magically grown a pair. A majority of the US and a super majority of Democrats are pro-legalization, so it is getting really delightfully awakward. If the Democrats are fucking stupid beyond all reason (and I think they are) and vote for that worthless establishment corporate sock puppet in, and she wins against whatever corporate sock puppet the Republicans put in who is exactly the same except for a few wedge issues, I would be surprised if she, like Obama, finally tacitly has a change of heart when preparing to run for a second term and her anti-progressive douche baggery has gotten too awkward to keep ignoring. Even then, I am sure she will pull Obama, say that she is for it, and then do literally nothing, hoping that the courts or a bureaucracy solves the fight for her.

God fucking damn it pisses me off that she is going to be nominee. The worst part is that in the debates and with reporters the question is going to be ignored and dodged. I would love for one fucking time during a debate the nominee to really nail down a candidate. ā€œDo you think your husband, Obama, and Bush should be serving drug time for their drug useā€ would be an excellent question that will never be asked. When she inevitably dodges and refuses the answer the question, I would love it if they would dog her and stick with it until they dragged an answer out of her. That will of course never happen

Fuck. I despise our political system.

Iā€™d like to give a gentle reminder that Ritalin and other ADHD drugs are really, genuinely necessary for a lot of kids and adults to get by. Iā€™m willing to believe that they are also sometimes mis-prescribed or abused. But Iā€™ve had the experience, as a child and an adult, of staring at a blank computer screen for six hours and weeping with frustration because holding onto my focus for long enough to write one paragraph is like trying to grip a handful of water.

With Ritalin, I have a bachelorā€™s degree and a reasonably successful career. Without it, I wouldnā€™t have finished high school. I probably wouldnā€™t have finished middle school. Itā€™s that important.

In other news, drug-addicted felons comatose-like state of living death inures them to mild bodily ticks. ā€œThe price is too damn high!ā€ says concerned busybody.

if thereā€™s no placebo control group, then itā€™s not science.

I see your point ā€“ this isnā€™t final stage scientific proof, itā€™s preliminary data from the drugā€™s open label testing stage. However, it is a valid precursor to the controlled double-blind trials that are currently underway.

It is, indeed, part of a scientific process and the results are already very encouraging.

And, the fact that marijuana is still a Schedule 1 drug is absolutely ridiculous when plenty of valid science has already shown itā€™s vastly safer than alcohol, etc. and does have evidence for medicinal properties.

See here:

Sativex (derived from Cannabis) is already used to treat different types of pain, such as pain from cancer or multiple sclerosis. It is approved in Canada and many parts of Europe, FFS.

Meanwhile, Republicansā€¦

There is more money to be made in locking people away and taking their possessions than there is in allowing a plant to be used as effective medicine. When that changes, marijuana will be legal.

edit to add - here is a link to the patent the US government holds on using marijuana cannibanoids as an antioxidant and neuro-protectant http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/f0/US-patent-6630507.pdf
Even they think marijuana has medicinal propertiesā€¦ giving lie to that whole schedule one thing

Thanks for sharing that; I couldnā€™t agree with you more. Re-reading my post, I can see how my tone (and over-emphasis of the commercial potential of psychostimulants) suggested otherwise. That was me doing a poor job of restraining my frustration with the FDAā€™s scheduling, which seems to be influenced by endemic misconceptions at least as much as clinical research. Both cannabinoid and amphetamine medications have demonstrated therapeutic benefits outweighing any reasonable risk posed to their target demographic. And yet, with very few exceptions, cannabinoids remain Schedule I while amphetamines (including methamphetamine) are Schedule II, despite the latterā€™s higher abuse potential.

Iā€™ve known several people over the years who were regularly prescribed a psychostimulant to address their struggles with ADHD. None, to my knowledge, ever abused their medication. On the contrary, most of them resented having to take it. I know how they feel. Iā€™m one of them.

This reflects my anecdotal observations as well. I would just add to that list, an astounding amount of fear.

Itā€™s interesting that studies indicating a potentially beneficial effect from a substance extracted from marijuana seem always to be touted as a reason for general legalization. A useful medical anaesthetic can be derived from coca plants. Does that mean growing them should be freely permitted? The arguments seem quite similar.

Why not? Itā€™s just a plant. And not even especially toxic. There are way more poisonous things out there, freely permitted for decorative purposes and otherwise pretty useless.

This plant is very poisonous, and an ornamental that you can grow as much of as you like. It also can be used to make an extract with deleriant properties, or just poison. It is used in medicine to make medications that treat heart failure.

This plant is mildly poisonous to humans, very poisonous to house pets, perfectly legal to grow as much as you like, and produces fruit containing powerful psychostimulants that can be eaten raw, or made into a drink. Highly addictive with moderate withdrawl symptoms. People feed this to their children.

This plant is moderately poisonous, legal to grow at home without any restrictions, toxic to house pets, contains powerful and highly addictive psychostimulants including a molecule that damages the conformation of the nACh receptors in the brain, permanently disturbing the balance of the acetylcholine system of the users for the rest of their lives. The products made with this plant are also known carcinogens. You can buy these products from many stores. There are no approved medicinal uses of this plant as there are much better drugs that do what it does with fewer side-effects.

This plant is legal to grow in large quantities on private residences. It is mostly non-toxic. During itā€™s fruiting stage, it produces sap that is rich in opium. The sap alone is enough to be an effective analgesic and euphoriant, and can be highly concentrated into a more potent and pure substance with relatively minimal processing. While the drugs it produces are illegal to purify without a license, the plant itself along with the raw sap are unrestricted.

The following two plants combined with some domesticated microbes can generate a powerful deleriant drug that is highly addictive and impairs motorskills and executive cognition. This drug is also a severe hepatotoxin, and most domestic animals will be severely poisoned or killed if they consume any appreciable amount. This drug can also cause oral, stomach and colorectal cancers. This drug is legal to synthesize in most states in moderate amounts, with the only restrictions being on sales and not having extreme volumes.
