Money has no morals and doesn’t understand the concept of ethics. It’s only goal is to reproduce - as often and as much as possible. Those who worship it, have the same problem, and the same failing. This disease is spreading and needs to be controlled.
The best way to tackle the scumbags is to ignore them until they’re irrelevant.

The consequences are far from proportional to the harm, but in this case several folks lost their jobs (including the guy behind the investment itself, and the firm’s general counsel, who probably had little if anything to do with it).
As someone who works with folks like this, I can tell you that while losing a job might not seem like a big deal (especially for the folks at the top who already have millions or even billions in the bank), the fear of losing a job absolutely keeps the legal and compliance departments at hedge funds on their toes (and stepping on everyone else’s toes too). And this is exactly why we need things like the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act and the US Treasury Office of Foreign Asset Control. The fact that this story is a big deal suggests that the regulatory regime actually works pretty well most of the time.
Only if the actual evil-doers get prosecuted. And I don’t believe that has ever happened, ever, in the history of humanity. Okay, maybe Adolf Eichmann. Otherwise, you’re fired, followed by a month in Barbados, followed by starting another hedge fund. If hell wasn’t real we would be forced to invent it.
