When I was at school, I was told it was from the Greek ‘kubernetes’ meaning ‘helmsman’.

I put on my robe and wizard hat.

I’ve always thought the same. What i remember reading… somewhere… was he used it because steering is a system of continual feedback. ( And so, AI doesn’t need to plan everything in advance. )

The other example i remember was the act of picking up a glass from a table. You don’t plan the whole journey, you just move your hand in the general direction, and your hand reaches the right spot through continuous adjustment based on feedback from your eyes and muscles.
