10 reported killed in Oregon college shooting

Sorry, the only number I look at is the count of innocents murdered by an angry person with a gun.

So how many dead people in schools and public places is an acceptable trade off in order to allow people to have the enjoyable fun of target shooting?

"Hey - coincidentally, I just found out I won a $400 AR-15 Billet receiver upper/lower set from a facebook group I am in. "

Donā€™t do this.

That isnā€™t the way to come to a rational conclusion to anything if you only look at one data point and not the rest. Thatā€™s like saying all such and such do crime because I only look at the crime numbers, or vaccines only cause allergic reactions, because you only look at the allergic reaction numbers, or sugar pills is the best cure because it worked in this percentage of tests.

Sorry, Iā€™m not buying the gun apologetics.

People are constantly being murdered by weapons that were explicitly designed as killing devices and that which we have no good reason for having in a society with over 300 million citizens. You can call people irrational all you want but Iā€™m tired of murdered children and spree killings. Time to join the rest of the industrialized world and actually police firearm ownership like adults. Licensing, training requirements, insurance requirements, and draconian tracking of all firearms should be the rule of the day. You want a gun? Great. You have to take a class and maintain a certain number of hours in it every year. You have to have liability insurance for your firearms. You are responsible for anything that happens with your firearm, including being an accessory on any crime that it is an instrument of.

Which is why regulation of gun ownership has been found to be ineffective across the world.

Oh, wait, no, actually thatā€™s complete bullshit.

Just curious, where else do you instantly run to explain after every mass shooting that nothing needs to done in terms of gun control? Or is this the only place where you feel the same need every single damn time to explain that people should worry more about falling into swimming pools and so on? I mean really, why do you do it, every time? Do you think youā€™ve ever changed the mind of anyone here? (I do remember you changing your avatar from the old one, a gun ā€“ interesting change, that.)

I just Torā€™d my way to Infowars (because Iā€™m not having that shit in my regular browser history) and scrolled down to the comment thread of their two sentence story on this. Second comment in.

Thatā€™s on the regular story. Thereā€™s also a story about how the college was a gun free zone which is way longer. You know, because the important details.

Human fucking parasitesā€¦

I changed my avatar when they did something to the BBS software and everyone lost their avatars. I didnā€™t have the other one handy and I had just taken a pic of a new Fett statue. So there you go. I probably like Boba Fett a little more than guns.

I enjoy shooting and I think most of the attacks on gun control come from a view of misinformation and a skewed bias of reality. That there is more danger out there than what there actually is. We already have A LOT of gun laws, but you never will be able to make a 100% fool proof system. Not with out some draconian government. Drugs are 100% illegal and they are as easy if not easier to get than guns. Iā€™ve said in the past I would be open to gun laws that I think would DO anything, but much like making weed ā€œsuper duper double illegalā€ didnā€™t actually stop people from using it, most gun laws will only stop law abiding people.

In general I am against a lot of the laws done in the interest of ā€œsafetyā€ that have potential for misuse by the government or mainly strip the freedoms of the majority to go after the minority of the abusers. Such examples would be the drug laws, surveillance laws, the TSA, search and seizure, Patriot Act, etc.

I would think you of all people would be sympathetic to my rational - after all, I have seen you rightly defend many people who are negatively stereotyped. The average personā€™s perception of a group of people is often time grossly out of line with reality.

And I donā€™t plead my case to convince YOU or others set with their opinion. I do it for the lurkers on the fence.

Who are these mythical people? Is this the ā€œsilent majorityā€ that I so often see used rhetorically?

Well one could ask why any of us do any of this then, right?

Because the overall public sentiment is shifting and Iā€™m happy to help it shift.

I didnā€™t see an answer to my question about how many deaths are an acceptable trade off so you can go plink at targets. Can you give a number?

How many school shooting as just acceptable losses in return for freedom ā„¢?

Iā€™m not on the fence, but maybe I apply?

I own some guns (no handguns), I hunt for food (to procure humane meat), and I also think our gun laws are fucked and need a major overhaul.

So Iā€™m not on the fence, but I believe I have a more nuanced view than BAN ALL GUNZ vs MOAR GUNS!

Edit: Not sure how that smiley face got in there. Iā€™m certainly not smiling todayā€¦

Good thing almost no one in these threads calls for the 100% and complete banning of guns. Iā€™d be happy with European level controls, which have been shown to largely work in their home nations and have for many decades now.

No - I have no number. Though I bet if I knew you better, I could find something you partake in, find how many people it kills per year, and then ask you if that is an acceptable number, and if so, how high would it take for you to want to prevent people from doing that thing.

I assume then you are also a proponent of the War on Drugs, keeping us from poisoning ourselves?

Would it be something that involves the use of a device only made to kill things? Good luck.

I doubt you would find anything, that aside, that I would not agree to require a license to do if it involved thousands of deaths a year, like, say, a car.

No, Iā€™m a proponent on licensing and regulation of drugs. Letā€™s try it for guns too. How about it?

And yet, no doubt, most mass shooters get their guns legally. So much for your proudly worn and heartless ā€œrational.ā€
