Indeed. Chihuly designs the pieces but has assistants do the actual creation on account of not being able to hold a glassblowing pipe anymore. He’s been pretty open about this though.

Definitely not saying that this isn’t open information, and actually done by very good means (thus the mention of the Hilltop Artists program), but it is an interesting discussion of what can be credited to an artist.

Is something 95% made by students in the style and under the supervision of the original artist still “genuine”?

If it’s 100% made by students, but designed by the original artist, is it then the original artist’s work because of the creative element?

I don’t have any good answers for this.

By comparison, we recognize multiple “Mona Lisa’s” as student work, not as original DaVinci’s…
