It does do a magnificent job of threading the needle between “the city isn’t doing enough” and “the city has done everything it can”. “The city is irresponsible, for doing too much”?

That said, I might need to add “It’s human factors 101” to the bingo card.

Cars never had to worry about that crossing. But it definitely does not look like an average bridge crossing to me.

Perhaps I’m just a more careful (ok, terrified) driver than you when I’m in a rental truck, hence your greater sympathy toward the morons who are getting into accidents now that the clearance has been raised. Even so, that is not the kind of blaring warning I think most people would miss – but again, perhaps I’m a more careful driver than you are.

AKA: laziness. If I was a professional trucker and knew that my route was taking me anywhere in the vicinity of that town I’d be on high alert before even starting my engine.

The problem will remain, for (as stats indicate) an increasingly smaller number of careless idiots.

There was a time when the blame could be legitimately pinned on the city and/or the railroad company cheaping out on a solution. That time has definitely passed. Really, after the clearance was raised I’ll bet insurance companies became a lot less willing to pay out fully on accidents at the bridge.

Anyhow, it’s clear that you’re not going to be convinced, so I’ll let you keep blaming everyone else but the drivers.

The message is hopelessly mixed. Everybody everywhere GOES when they see green. Unless and until drivers snap to the fact that hey the flashing sign means YOU, they’re gonna go with the two green lights. Those need to strobe red when the too-tall circuit is triggered. It’s too darn bad that everyone else would have to hit the brakes too, but what are the priorities?

Then the money spent on raising the bridge is wasted, because it is effectively still only 11’8" high. The bar will not give way if a truck hits it, because its purpose is to protect the bridge itself by physically stopping any overheight vehicle that strikes it.

Someone has to Draw the line somewhere!
