20 minute Uber ride cost $1,114.71 on New Year's Eve

Oh the joy’s of living in the big apple…

I’m not sure Uber is responsible for any liability in Canada, either, yet they still have that $5 million policy on top of a driver’s personal insurance. I wonder if they have that here because Canadians don’t (personally) pay for healthcare any way, so there’s less chance of a big claim coming their way in the case of an accident?

I suppose that could be one way to hedge their bets. I’m not an Uber expert or insider so I couldn’t say for sure. I suspect that these are feel good policy’s designed to gain the public trust. It’s been my experience that insurance companies don’t like to pay out in general. It’s their job to collect premiums and not pay out claims. I don’t think of Travis Kalanick as a humanitarian and his record shows he’d prefer litigation to doing the so-called “right thing”, so I suspect he has a similar attitude.

FWIW, there are in fact some Chicago cab drivers who do just that. Three at least on Twitter, including the one I follow, ChicagoCabbie. Instead of using his cab company dispatcher, he takes all his fares from customers who message him directly in advance. He makes a point of specializing in taking people to and from the largest airport (O’Hare), so he’s guaranteed a good fare every time. He’s cut out the best chunk of the business for himself.

I live on the south side. I’ve actually had cab dispatchers say to me on the phone “I’m just the dispatcher, I can’t make a cab driver come to your location.” Isn’t that the definition of a dispatcher? Don’t get me started on how awful the official cab system is here, if you’re not on the north side or right downtown.

Yeah.

When you can get a medallion cab to come to Englewood every time you call one, then you’ll know that supply has caught up with demand.

That would be my point!
