I’m a biracial Black woman with a conscious, liberal White mother, which means that over the years, we have had some very interesting conversations about racism.
Most of my mom’s own family rejected her over us, her ‘Mixed’ children, although I didn’t actively realize that while growing up.
But as a young adult, my mom was the first person to hip me to the fact that many bigots and racists don’t actually realize that’s what they are. Both her brothers are raging bigots, yet neither one realizes it, simply because they are not on the most extreme end of what I call ‘the hatred spectrum.’
I remember being stunned by her telling me that at that time, but just from what I’ve personally witnessed in the 30 years since, she was spot on.

Because it’s a very new phenomenon. It boggles my mind the kind of racist & authoritarian messages people post on LinkedIn and never have it blow back on them. For the past 15 years it’s been like that, and it’s only really changed in the past week.

“Insensitive” is an interesting word choice. It implies that they knew what they were doing when they created, edited, and approved the graphic, but just didn’t think anyone would care.
