58 killed and at least 515 injured by gunman in Vegas

Crap crap crap, you do realise that they will be claiming this was all just a Vegas stunt now, don’t you? Er, you in a semi-rhetorical manner, I mean. It’s sickening to realise how quick Alex Jones and his band of idiots will be claiming this shooting was fake.

“So I had to go grab a gun. I’m fing headed back. It’s fing so crazy — some kind of mass shooting,” -Dan Bilzerian

Bet he has an NRA sticker on his ride. Oh, wait: “He buys a new pick-up truck so he can carry around his 20mm anti-tank gun.”

Allot of good that did.

Those videos are difficult to watch. I feel horrible for those who were there.

And there you go, an all too common response. “Someone’s going crazy with a gun, gotta go get my gun!” Which somehow isn’t at all crazy.

The minute I saw the headline, I knew I was not going to be watching any of the videos embedded below. @beschizza can post his death porn, but I’m not going to watch any of it.

Um, why not? There isn’t any evidence yet that this is politically or ideologically motivated.

There seems to be an increasing trend of people telling others how they must perceive and frame events. As if feeling strongly that a thing has happened somehow makes us mind-readers because it allows us more cathartic avenues for dealing with tragedy. As if calling it something else will help! When there are serious problems, I think we benefit from not having the discourse framed from a POV of armchair conjecture. The same can be said about the classic descriptions of violence as “random” or “crazy”. Speculating about the motives of the person who did this, without any evidence to that effect, seems distinctly unhelpful.

I think that’s two vertical muscles, maybe the sternohyoids, with a short horizontal shadow.

I think it’s just a shadow on his neck.

I presume he hated the idea of random strangers rather than any random strangers in particular.

Or they call police to storm the place with guns, which has the same effect. “I saw one suspicious person with a gun, made a phone call, and now I have dozens of people with guns.” That’s typically when actual shooting starts.

I wonder where the “Banning guns won’t work” idiots stand on this. I’m sure a chinese man with a knife could’ve done the same damage. Or a baseball bat was it?

Maybe good guys with guns could’ve sniped the shooter who was hiding on a 32nd floor. That’s why I always carry my fully kitted SKS everywhere with me!

They’ll find some justification. I’m sure.

That “the good guys with guns” statement is extremely difficult for the pro-guns folks to spout off right now. Of course it’s not going to keep them from trying it this week though.

I mean, is the NRA going to say that the attendees should have carried high powered sniper rifles to outdoor music festivals to shoot back at someone who would be firing at them from a hotel room in a skyscraper because there might have been an off chance of such a scenario happening??? Come on now.

But the entire country is terrorized every time a mass shooting occurs! “Active shooter” drills are being practiced in gradeschools because that is our new reality.

Right. And if people still need to hear about “ties to a terrorist organization” before they’ll be convinced, I tell them that the terrorist organization behind such attacks is the NRA.

All I know is that I’m tired of being terrorized- and that the call is coming from inside of the house, but no one will pay attention.

That is a terrible idea. People who are trained to deal with violent conflicts are aware of the importance of not panicking. The US police apparatus and mass media are taking advantage of tragic events, because when people are conditioned to let their amygdalas be hijacked, we put them in charge. Somebody has to be in charge while everybody is in terror, and this plays directly into conservative strategies of reliance upon centralized authority.

Those drills have not been demonstrated to have any practical benefit, apart from inculcate the masses into fear, and normalize the militarization of public life. It expands police budgets and powers without actually saving lives.
