The actor Julian Sands died in a similar situation. A friend of mine nearly did too in a hike in a state park where he fell into a gully and injured his ankle. Solo wilderness excursions are not a good idea, even for experienced hikers and even with modern communications tech.
Long’s Peak, the one this man was attempting, is not a pleasant hike. It’s a Fourteener, so it’s usually on a bucket list. I hear the hike is challenging and that it gets really difficult at the boulder field near the top. I never attempted it, but did do others nearby that were a lot more pleasant, and almost as beautiful. That being said, I always hiked with a friend because it was just a better experience, one to look back on. I look back on my solo hikes and just shake my head–bobcats, rattlesnakes, not enough water… Now, please excuse me, while I kiss the ground.
