No discussion of Golden Gate Park’s history is complete without a shout-out to John McLaren, the Scottish horticulturalist and John Muir buddy who spent decades of his life turning barren, wind-swept sand dunes into a lush green paradise through pure, stubborn force of will. Next to Emperor Norton he’s probably the one figure of San Francisco’s past I’d have most liked to meet.
Happy to report the Queen Wilhelmina Tulip Garden is in beautiful bloom this week. Pity all the sesquicentennial celebrations had to be called off.
My memories of Golden Gate Park is of walking thru it in the 80s & because I had longhair & a beard, people coming up & saying “Got pot? Let’s smoke some!”
Pure gigglefest. Thank you.
