I guess I don’t understand why somebody would want anything more or less based upon a name. After all, you can already call things whatever you like, regardless of what somebody else has already written upon it.
That said, I think that “neon” is a deliberately confusing name, considering that even most gas-discharge tubes don’t have neon in them. It gets enshrined in usage only because most people don’t know what they are talking about.
