I think they just took a look at the Sikorsky S72 (Sikorsky S-72 - Wikipedia) and just evolved it to have afterburners. Naturally, it’s a lot harder to get to work in practice than a TV series would have it look.

Awwww, I loved me some Airwolf growing up. I need to acquire that theme song for some fast driving around music.
The whole soundtrack is actually a fun little 80s synth treat. But yes, that theme is wonderful.
