Alabama refuses to comply with a Federal court order demanding equal representation for Black people

Redrawing the districts has to happen every 10 years minimum in every state I know of. A new census means the districts have to be redone. Populations change.
How we fix gerrymandering is mixed committees of people who are not elected officials drafting them. A mix of the two dominant parties and several other people. Plus some strong laws with teeth to order new committees and new maps when those committees get overrun by politicians.
This is not a one-and-done process

I should have been more clear. What the city did was take gerrymandered maps that completely diluted Black representation, and created new ones that completely concentrated Black representation. They went from a low percentage set of maps to a set where one district is almost entirely Black. Then they got to say “See! We fixed it and now there’s a Black Councilperson.” And they’ve gotten away with it.

Instead, they could have drawn maps that better reflected the demographics, and made it possible for there to be two or three Black councilpeople.
