Yes, and retroactively trying to apply today’s labels to people who lived in the past can be problematic too. Adam Conover recently interviewed a trans author who wrote a book on the history of nonbinary gender concepts (dating back to at least the 8th century BC) and in that interview they stessed that applying modern terms & labels to historical figures can be problematic. They discussed the controversy in the LGBTQ+ community surrounding a commemorative plaque honoring Anne Lister (1791-1840) who was being celebrated for what many consider to be the UK’s first lesbian marriage. But Lister never referred to herself as a lesbian during her lifetime, and based on her choice of clothing some modern people consider Lister to have been a trans man. As a result there’s been a bit of a fight over which group can claim “ownership” of her legacy, and it got a bit ugly. But there’s no way to know for sure how Lister would have self-identified were she alive today so it’s best to just use the terms that she used for herself when she was still alive.
