Amazon is full of Chinese counterfeits and they're driving out legit goods

I’m old enough to kind of remember that. It was the 70s, though, and it was already dying out. I remember reading an article in the very early 80s about how in the future clothing would be made of much cheaper materials, and therefore be more inexpensive but not last as long. The article helpfully suggested using the worn-out clothes as cleaning rags.

You still see a few ads around bragging about how such-and-such is durable and will last a long time, but those are few and far between.

… The shipping API team’s bug bounty, then? Though there’s probably a government intermediary on the planet who’d like to collect it for you; I didn’t expect small claims court to offer more than a keyhole to agency negotiations (iff reordering to a different location puts it where a Small Claims Court has jurisdiction), but I haven’t fingered the valuation administrator or irregular trade transmogrifier here.

At that point I feel silly not mentioning asking the shipper to collect their $300 adequately.

Actual shipping charge on postal label $60.99. Sellers listed charge to Asia per box $65. One box came but the shipping charge through Amazon was $650.

I mean, Otterbox, Sharpie, Nike, Beats, Bose, Crayola… and so on. All of them.

Are you disappointed in Boing Boing?

I’d love to buy stuff from my Friendly Local Hobby store. I’m willing to wait longer, and I’d even pay a bit of a premium to do so.

But there are two problems:

  1. The service at the “friendly” local stores can usually be more accurately described as “surly”.

  2. It isn’t “a bit” of a price premium. For example, an RC transmitter that costs $60 from HobbyKing is priced at $300+ in the local stores. $2 props go for $10, $20 ESCs at $100, etc.

As I said, I’ll happily pay a bit more to support local retailers. But I’m not paying a 400% markup.

I love Hobby King!

I’m old enough to have seen him in this era, on Channel 11 when I lived in New York:

I’m not old enough to have seen him at the peak of his career, but I can remember seeing his New Soupy Sales Show when I was a youngun, and I’m only 44. But then, he was always pretty big in Detroit, so that might be why I remember him so well. Or maybe I’m just Old. :smirk:

Ordered Otterbox, got Offalbox. Smell wasn’t that bad, no problem. A bit heavier, but nobody on my train was leaning in to see what model I had. Rrrreeeally glad I ordered on Prime, a friend of mine got a some distressed ones that stuck to time itself, but mine were fine.
