Amazon's NYC digs being built on land that would have been used for low-income housing

Cuomo was renominated, and won reelection with 63% of the vote.

The 2018 NY governor’s race wasn’t a referendum on Amazon HQ2. What we are seeing are a lot of NYC people questioning the wisdom of the bid now that the city got it (or at least half of it, which still might cost more than the city bargained for).

In addition to this situation there’s the larger impact on the already expensive housing market, on the overburdened public transit system, and on the tax base. As with stadium projects and Olympics bids and smaller towns inviting in big-box retailers, there’s an informed suspicion that competing in these beauty contests may end with the costs outweighing the benefits for ordinary citizens.

My father hasn’t stopped gloating over the fact that he predicted this very result months ago: Bezos has residences in NYC and near DC…

Mostly true, although making the bid should have made Cuomo’s attitude to the taxpayers and small businesses of NYC pretty clear.

This is called putting the cart before the horse, and rarely works out very well.

Divert some shipping containers into the back parking lot and build an Amazon workers’ condo complex.

“Mostly” as in 99% true. His support for Amazon HQ2 was simply part and parcel of that attitude. The GOP alternative to Cuomo in that election only multiplied that attitude 100x.

This is called “buyer’s remorse”, based on informed second thoughts that a purchase may not be the fit it first seemed. If the grace period for returns hasn’t expired, there’s nothing to say they can’t change their minds. Not that it will happen in this case, because not only Cuomo but De Blasio is on board.

Came here to say the same thing - not defending Amazon at all, but as a long time NYC resident (up until 2 years ago), this was standard form. Every bloodsucking developer claims they will build affordable housing and then that gets traded away or redefined as $700k studios. In a couple of cases developers did build “affordable housing” as part of larger projects and then had a separate entrance, no amenities, etc.
