Anita Sarkeesian on women's bodies as prizes in video games

Oh god, my sides.

Certainly she was a woman, not a girl. Otherwise she would’ve been working illegally, her employer subject to fines and/or incarceration, and anyone viewing her nude would be subject to the sex offenders registry.

She named herself “dziewczyna” which means girl in Polish, she also called her co-workers that way (“dziewczyny”). She was nineteen when I met her and has been probably working there for one year already… There is no such list in Poland.

I do not get that one liner but I guess it is “funny”, even though it fails to carry any substantive value into discussion.

It is because the statement that Anita is even a star system close to misandry is funny. Because she isn’t.

Well, with all the good evidence she has to prove her point, she still manipulates some other to prove her point even more. Why would she do that? Because she is completely honest person?

Oh sorry, I should have explained. You and everything you think are hilarious. My sides are hurting from laughing at what a joke you are. That’s on me. I should have been more clear.

Don’t cry, no one is expecting you to counter-argue.

Let us table this, and both reflect. You are not being rude, but I don’t think either of us are going to convince either of us of anything. Except perhaps that my hands smell amazing because I just harvested a ton of thai basil.

I am sorry I got annoyed and carried away.

The latest video is completely fine, there is nothing wrong with it. I do not know if this might be considered DLC, she forgets about that Nude Rider thing you could buy for first Tomb Rider (in pre DLC era if I remember it good) that would strip Lara Croft off clothes - but I do not think it is that important.
I do agree on the GTA thing

What I am trying to state is that insinuating that something has been designed for sole purpose to hurt someone, when it is not true, is not correct argument; the exact narrative of Her that I mind here is the commentary from Hitman “strip club scene” where she states (I do not know if she is playing the game at that time or it is someone else she is narrating) :
“The player can not help but treat these female bodies as things to be acted upon because they were designed, constructed and placed in this(the) environment for that singular purpose. Players are meant to derive the perverse pleasure for desecrating the bodies of unsuspecting virtual female characters”
So it seams that every player is a maniac and just cannot gel him/herself to beat up these girls event if game actually punishes you for doing so - which means that they are not supposed to be hurt. So you can not state that this is the singular purpose they have been placed there. Actually there are a lot of maniacs that run around that game and stockpile bodies for selfies but generally you fail to play the game properly.
Even if she is here narrating gameplay of some maniac, it still does not mean that these female characters have been designed to be hurt.

I agree with @japhroaig on further direction of this discussion and I am out.

Yet still far better than Don Knuth’s schedule.

Don’t know about this Don Knuth character, but I’ve met Don Bluth. Runs a nice theater in Scottsdale, classy joint.

Awesome for you. Cheers Mate and have a nice evening.

I think he means Dr. Ruth.

Bringing up pornography in general isn’t really the point. The point is that the gaming industry injects sexualization and objectification of women’s bodies in far too many mainstream games (that feature people). It’s as if you had the restaurant industry outfitting waitresses in Hooters garb in the majority of restaurants instead of a specialized few.

A cogent reply. Now I’m curious whether being constantly surrounded by those who are paid to be friendly and polite, regardless of the customer’s behaviour, might contribute to any sociopathic tendencies their customers might have. Utterly anecdotally, you hear a lot of unbelievably bad behaviour stories about that crowd (not that you’d hear good behaviour stories…)

Wouldn’t the service that pornography provides (string-free sex) require that you fail to acknowledge the personhood of the person providing the service. As soon as they’re fully realized as people, the whole “beautiful person who wants to have sex with you” is utterly crushed. The “smiling pretty girl with no clothes” becomes, in all likelihood, someone who had very few other choices and may well have been abused. Real people makes pornography tragedy, not sexually alluring. (And yes, I’m overstating the case, but the broad strokes are fairly accurate.)

Sorry, but I think a failure to objectify would utterly doom pornography and prostitution.

I think the fundamental social problem with pornography and prostitution can be summarized by the fact that most of us are “objects” who provide a service for money. Yet most of us don’t despise our customers the way those in the sex industry are famous for. I think most humans deep down realize that being objectified on that level is fundamentally worse than being objectified on most other levels. Sure, some of it can be laid at the feet of cultural taboos against sex, but I think there’s something fundamental in human psychology that is damaged and hurt by being sexually objectified.

(And yes, I’m certain there’s some isolated cases otherwise. But they’re likely few and far between.)

So I have never worked or participated in the sex industry. I think there may be an act of Congress banning me from it  But why do you say that?

I’ve talked to, well, a semi decent handful of workers and while everyone knows eyes wide open it is an illusion, there still appears to be affection* between certain people. Kinda on the same gut-feeling-percentage I see in normal life.

  • affection being defined as generally enjoying each other’s company

I think you bring up good arguments, in a respectful way. But I wouldn’t be quite so quick on the conclusions. (But what do I know  )
