Lightning is beautiful and fascinating in its many forms. I’d still rather be in a shelter when a hurricane approaches than setting up the tripod to capture images of it.
Aren’t those called sprites?
IIRC, gigantic jets are indeed gigantic sprites. STEVE is another really interesting, fairly recently discovered atmospheric phenomenon, and well worth hipping oneself to.
I most ahem highly recco interested parties subscribe to Spaceweather.com for news re: solar activity & stuff like geomagnetic storms, noctilucent (a term coined by an SF writer) clouds, auroras, cosmic radiation levels, meteor showers, comets, eclipses, weird/uncommon atmospheric phenomena, etc etc etc ad fascinatio.
ETA gigantic jets and STEVE links
Coolness.
Here’s a completely unrelated high speed capture. The 30-second video shows a very slow-mo drawn-out 0.13 seconds - juuust enough time for humans to register a flash.
