Oh, that’s new?
I thought it was just another mpeg container file.
Also, I’m really glad the standard option (e.g. on Imgur) is to mute sound.

I HATE auto play.

However, it adds to some GIFs to have sound.

(And I disagree that gifs need sound. It’s already an incredibly inefficient, low quality, and bloated format as it is. If you need sound, just post a video.)

They tried this with jpeg as well, although to be fair it required a plugin to parse out and play the audio. Whats wrong with VP9 or H.264 and mp4 containers? Imgur, for example has been re-encoding gifs for sometime into an mp4 and calling it gifv.
